Your Fabric Questions, Answered
Batiks are hand-dyed using a wax-resist process, so the color saturates the fabric, and there is no true wrong side. They are usually made on a slightly tighter weave and feature rich, layered color. Each piece is unique and tends to make a bold statement in a quilt.
Blenders are printed fabrics with subtle textures or tonal variations. They are designed to coordinate with prints and read almost like a solid from a distance. Unlike batiks, they do have a right and wrong side.
Think of batiks as the focal point and blenders as the quiet support. Both add depth; it simply depends on how much attention you want that fabric to draw.
A general guide: Baby quilts (36x52 inches) need 3-4 yards total. Throw quilts (50x65 inches) need 4-6 yards. Twin quilts need 6-8 yards. Queen quilts need 8-10 yards. King quilts need 10-12 yards. These estimates include backing. For more precise calculations, check your pattern requirements or use a quilt fabric calculator.
It depends on your preference and project. Prewashing removes excess dye and sizing and allows the fabric to shrink before you cut, which can help prevent surprises later.
Many quilters skip prewashing because that slight shrinkage after the first wash creates the soft, crinkled texture we all love. If you are making garments, mixing different fabric types, or working with bold colors that may bleed, prewashing is a wise choice.
Whichever route you choose, stay consistent with all fabrics in your project for the best results.
Fabric availability depends on the manufacturer’s production run. Some basics are restocked regularly, while seasonal or limited-edition prints may not be restocked once they sell out.
If you truly love a fabric, it is wise to buy a little extra. We recommend ordering 10 to 15 percent more than your pattern calls for to allow for cutting mistakes or future repairs. Keep in mind that dye lots can vary, so purchasing everything at the same time helps ensure consistent color throughout your quilt.
